The other show business organization that I’ve been delighted to be involved with is the Grand Order of Water Rats – a pompous sounding name for a jolly, funny and unique organization. I had noticed a pin in the lapels of several of my comedy heroes – Bud Flanagan, Ted Ray, Norman Wisdom, to name a few. It was an emblem of a small gold rat. Actually a water vole – also known as a water rat. They were Water Rats, members of an exclusive band of performers who get together once a fortnight to enjoy each other’s company and raise a few bob for charity.

How it all began is well worth telling – so I will. In 1856, a couple of music hall comics were working in Newcastle. The owner of the theatre, Richard Thornton, a well-known impresario in the North-East, was also the owner of a little trotting pony, Magpie. Thornton convinced the comics that the pony would do well racing in London, so they bought shares in the trotter. At the end of their week’s work they had to get Magpie back to London. Knowing nothing about horses, apart from the odds they carried when they backed them, they bought an extra first-class train ticket and the pony travelled back to the Smoke in the carriage with them.
